# The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis

## One-sentence takeaway

A pair of reacting and diffusing morphogens can destabilize a homogeneous tissue and spontaneously form spots, stripes, and other biological patterns.

## Why it matters here

Anoptic already lives on continuous fields (radiance cascades, reaction-like standing rules, procedural maps). Turing's linear-stability analysis is the original "the PDE is the program" paper: emergent structure without a central planner, which is exactly the grain of GRID COMMAND worldgen and of physics-as-code simulation.

## Key ideas

- Two (or more) morphogens react locally and diffuse at different rates; the linearized system about a homogeneous steady state can have a band of unstable spatial frequencies.
- The resulting "Turing patterns" are selected by geometry and diffusion constants, not by a pre-drawn template.
- Worked examples include dappling, tentacle arrangement, and gastrulation-scale instabilities.
- Bridges the discrete universal machine of 1936 to continuous dynamics: computation here is the evolution of a field.
