# Managing Complexity in the Halo 2 AI System

## One-sentence takeaway

Halo 2’s brain is a behavior DAG with binary relevancy, prioritized-list parents, and event-driven impulses — complexity paid in designer-readable rules, not in a soup of utility floats.

## Why it matters here

GRID COMMAND soldiers that must stay debugable should look here before growing a 200-node behavior tree per actor. Isla’s tricks — impulses dropped into the tree so higher-priority behaviors still win, tagging to lock whole subtrees, memory only for the running stack — are the operational model for Broadside squads.

## Key ideas

- Quantity of mundane behaviors is how games fake common sense; the failure modes are dithering, opacity, and designer overload.
- ~50 core behaviors in a DAG; custom characters splice extra impulses rather than forking the whole tree.
- Binary relevancy plus prioritized / sequential / looping / probabilistic parents; analog “desire floats” did not scale past a handful of children.
- Stimulus behaviors insert a short-lived impulse (leader died → flee 1–2 s) that still competes inside the tree; firing positions, orders, and styles are the designer-facing knobs.
