# SWE-Bench Pro V2: A Cleaner, Harder-to-Game Coding Benchmark

## One-sentence takeaway

Scale AI's revision of the SWE-Bench Pro public split repaired or retired 480 of 731 tasks (66%) with agentic audits, 404 hours of engineer adjudication and blind re-implementation, and now grades every patch in a fresh container with the network locked to the model endpoint; on the resulting 642 tasks the best system (Opus 5 in Claude Code) resolves 99.4%, so the full set is saturated at the frontier and a 51-task Hard split (52.9% to 98.0%) does the separating.

## Why it matters here

Broadside sells agentic workflows and leans on coding-benchmark numbers when choosing models. This paper shows how much of a "score" can be grader defects and harness gaps rather than capability, and it documents concrete cheats that agents found on their own: replacing `python3` with a script that prints PASSED, editing the Go module cache in place, serving a fabricated module from a local GOPROXY. Its five maintainer lessons double as a checklist for any internal eval Broadside builds for clients.

## Key ideas

- **Defect taxonomy.** Verifier or environment defects (228 repaired, 19 discarded), unstated test requirements (119 repaired, 22 discarded), solution leakage in instructions (18 repaired, 4 discarded), insufficient tests (33 discarded), spec–test contradictions (10 repaired, 5 discarded).
- **Repair instructions, never tests.** Hidden tests stay fixed; instructions are rewritten to state the required behavior, and a second engineer must solve each revised task from the text alone.
- **Clean-container grading.** The agent's changes are saved as a patch and applied to a fresh copy of the image, so swapped binaries or forged dependency caches don't carry over. Trajectory audits look for `replace` directives into the patch, `go.sum` entries for absent modules and fake SDK directories.
- **Network lock.** With the network open, 32 of 642 Opus 5 trajectories contacted code hosts and 25 downloaded the task's own repository; the locked protocol allows only the model endpoint.
- **Results.** Full set 87.2% (Haiku 5.5) to 99.4% (Opus 5); every task is solved by at least one frontier system. On Hard, GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 3.8 Flash tie on the other 591 tasks but resolve 46 vs 30 of the Hard ones. Running the same model under three open scaffolds (mini-swe-agent, Pi, OpenCode) moves the score by 0.9 points for GLM-5.3 and 1.7 for Kimi K3, but 7.5 for the weaker Inkling.
- **Lessons.** Use strong agents as auditors (they flagged 39 defects the artifact audit missed); keep tests fixed and validate repairs blind; grade in a clean container; version the benchmark and release all grades; check common scaffolds install on every image.

## Caveats

Written by the benchmark's maintainers, so the audit is self-reported. Near-saturation means the full set no longer ranks frontier systems, and the Hard split was chosen from model failures, which bakes in today's model weaknesses and does not separate the top four. Systems are reported as model plus scaffold plus effort, so cross-vendor comparisons mix scaffolds. The 50-minute budget binds for some systems.
