# Adjointness in Foundations

## One-sentence takeaway

Lawvere shows that the basic operations of logic — including the quantifiers — arise as adjoint functors, so the rules of inference are unit/counit laws rather than independently postulated schemas.

## Why it matters here

Typed ECS query is the same pattern: restriction/substitution is a diagonal, existential aggregation is a left adjoint, and universal/“all matching entities” is a right adjoint. Design the query combinators as that adjoint triple, not as ad-hoc folds.

## Key ideas

- Conjunction and implication appear as the product ⊣ exponential adjunction; truth values live in a cartesian closed structure.
- For a projection or weakening functor \(p^*\), existential quantification is a left adjoint and universal quantification a right adjoint: \(\exists \dashv p^* \dashv \forall\).
- Equality and substitution fit the same calculus: substitution is reindexing, and equality is the corresponding left adjoint (or unit) data.
- Foundational systems can be stated as a handful of adjointness axioms instead of a long list of logical rules.
- Once the adjoints are fixed, the usual βη/triangle identities are the proof theory.
