# The 2-monoidal structure of symmetric sequences

## One-sentence takeaway

Dwyer–Hess 2014 conjecture settled — symmetric sequences are 2-monoidal (composition × matrix), so every operad is a Day operad.

## Why it's lovely

Why you might love this: a decade-old conjecture about the two products on species/symmetric sequences, closed. Composition product and matrix product were long known separately; Dwyer–Hess conjectured they form a 2-monoidal category in the sense of Aguiar–Mahajan. Dan–Pfammatter prove it, and as a consequence every operad admits a Day-operad structure. Species get a free Day upgrade.

## Key ideas

- Symmetric sequences with the composition monoidal structure and the matrix monoidal structure.
- Theorem: these two structures form a 2-monoidal category (Aguiar–Mahajan 2010), proving the Dwyer–Hess 2014 conjecture.
- Method: a detailed analysis of the interchange between the two products.
- Corollary: every operad admits a Day-operad structure.

## Caveats

Settles the 2-monoidal conjecture and the Day-operad corollary; does not by itself rewrite the homotopy theory of operads. “Every operad is a Day operad” is a structure theorem, not a new model category of algebras.

## Implications for Broadside

Operads / species shelf. Two monoidal structures that actually interchange is the combinatorial counterpart of “you can rewrite in either order” — the same comfort you want from a 2-monoidal rewrite engine.
