# Quantum Hopf rigidity in symmetric monoidal categories

## One-sentence takeaway

Quantum groups only admit classical symmetries — Hopf coactions that look quantum must factor through affine group schemes.

## Why it's lovely

Why you might love this: a rigidity theorem that says the “quantum” symmetries of quantum groups were classical all along. A coaction of one Hopf algebra on another that preserves multiplication and comultiplication automatically preserves counit, antipode, and tensor-interchange, and factors through the coaction dual to an affine group scheme acting by Hopf automorphisms. Kasprzak et al., Budziński–Kasprzak, Brannan et al. unified and rewritten in symmetric monoidal categories. Clean CT/QA.

## Key ideas

- Input: a Hopf coaction that preserves associative-algebra structure and comultiplication.
- Automatic: preservation of counit, antipode, and tensor-interchange.
- The coaction factors through the dual of an affine group scheme acting by Hopf-algebra automorphisms — classical symmetries only.
- Unifies several “quantum groups have only classical symmetries” results (Kasprzak et al., Budziński–Kasprzak, Brannan et al.).
- Why: antipode, counit, and tensor-interchange of a Hopf algebra internal to any symmetric monoidal category live in the (non-symmetric) monoidal subcategory generated by multiplication and comultiplication, assuming a weak arrow-retraction invariance.

## Caveats

Rigidity for coactions that already preserve algebra structure *and* comultiplication — not a ban on all quantum symmetries in every category. The weak arrow-retraction invariance is a real hypothesis; check it in the concrete tensor category you care about.

## Implications for Broadside

Quantum-groups / Hopf shelf. The slogan is delicious: if it preserves the two generating operations, the rest of the Hopf package (and classicality) comes for free. Same flavour as “the interesting structure was already implied by the generators.”
