# Radiative Transfer

## One-sentence takeaway

Chandrasekhar's Radiative Transfer — the RTE book every SSS and volume paper stands on.

## Problem

Need the plane-parallel RTE, H-functions, and discrete ordinates in one place. Astronomy wrote it; graphics borrowed it.

## Design

Classical radiative transfer: invariant imbedding, discrete ordinates, polarization, stellar atmospheres. Dover 1960 reprint of the 1950 Clarendon edition.

## Evidence

Clarendon Press 1950; archive.org/details/radiativetransfe0000chan. No DOI on this edition. Lineage target of Hanrahan–Krueger and Ishimaru.

## Limitations

Plane-parallel atmospheres, not a BSSRDF on a mesh. Polarization and stellar context. Graphics reads a few chapters.

## Implications for Broadside

This is the transport textbook the dipole, quantized-diffusion, and path-traced SSS papers all cite. Anoptic's FMM+RC bet still needs an appearance model that solves this equation inside matter. Do not claim they already have SSS.

## Bottom line

Mint the book. Venue is the publisher. Do not invent a reprint DOI.
