# Position: Multi-Agent Systems Should Prioritize Concurrency Control

## One-sentence takeaway

MAS reliability often dies of lost updates and stale reads: agents concurrently mutate shared state across long LLM inference windows, and that is a concurrency-control bug, not a prompting bug.

## Why it matters here

Anoptic is a lock-free C/Vulkan ECS with a lock-free bus. GRID COMMAND is simultaneous units on shared world state. Last Frontier's 1078 already showed abort≠rollback when session KV retains the rejected branch — the GGPO analogue. This position paper is the general statement: adding agents without isolation, conflict detection, and structured access to shared resources reproduces classic DBMS/STM anomalies, amplified by multi-second inference windows that make every read stale. Do not build Broadside multi-agent dispatch as 'more chat threads'. Build it as Anoptic already builds the sim: explicit concurrency control. Listed Thursday 20 Aug (Atom published 6 Jun, on hold) — newly public in-window, same house recency as CacheScout.

## Key ideas

- Failure modes blamed on 'coordination' or 'communication' map onto lost updates, stale reads, and inconsistent snapshots.
- Long LLM inference windows are the isolation interval: the world moved while you were generating.
- Prescribe first-class concurrency control in MAS frameworks: conflict detection, isolation guarantees, structured access to shared resources — not another debate protocol.
- Position, not a system: the contribution is the diagnosis and the API claim, not a lock-free queue.

## Caveats

- Position paper. No implementation, no numbers, no Anoptic-shaped bus. The value is the mapping, which we already believe and now have a 2026 citation for.
- Does not replace 031/1105/1019; those are the mechanisms. This is the 'why MAS people should look at them' note.
- Atom published 2026-06-06; first public HTML listing is Thursday 20 Aug new submissions.
