# HELIX: Model-Harness Co-evolution for Recursive Self-Improvement

## One-sentence takeaway

The improving unit is the model–harness *pair*: build source-traceable harnesses for a frozen model, update the model from verified sibling trajectories, then rebuild the harness.

## Why it matters here

Last Frontier kept DeepSeek Harness (1050) as the product-side "everything is a plugin" runtime. HELIX is the research-side substrate that makes harness *evolution* auditable: typed ports, atoms, recipes, product shells, runtime policies, and an evidence plane that keeps intervention identity attached to traces. QuoteBench (1013) already showed matched scores hide command-path failures; HELIX's sibling set is the same idea applied to harness variants (success / regression / near-miss / alternative patch). Broadside's model-vs-harness standing topic, plus provenance-first memory: you cannot learn from a trajectory whose recipe lockfile was lost.

## Key ideas

- Build–update–rebuild. Harness utility is conditional on the model; a winner for *M_t* need not be the winner for *M_{t+1}*.
- Decomposes OpenCode, Pi Mono, Nanobot, Hermes Agent into 96 ports per product contract. 4^5 = 1,024 coupled recipes (4^6 with independent acceptance). Compiler + lockfile + pre-execution conformance checks.
- Dual output of one evolution round: (1) a better *fixed* harness for today's model, (2) verified sibling data (SFT / critic / filter / preference) for tomorrow's update.
- 65-candidate LiveCodeBench matrix: Pi 50/100, best fixed 52/100, post-hoc portfolio union 79/100. 23 zero-score candidates — blind composition is not a strategy. SWE-bench follow-up: OpenCode-family members 46/55 vs Pi 44/55; 200-slot slice materializes 438 training rows.

## Caveats

- One evolution round; they do **not** train the updated model. The loop is specified, not closed.
- Coding agents only (LCB + 55 SWE-bench Verified). Multi-component recipes, so no single-atom causal isolation.
- Oracle portfolio coverage is not a deployable score (no router evaluated). 23 failed recipes are data only if you keep identity and failure class.
