# Mesh Shaders in the Vulkan Ecosystem

## One-sentence takeaway

Turing mesh shaders replace the rigid vertex/tessellation/geometry chain with cooperative task+mesh workgroups that emit compact meshlets straight to the rasterizer.

## Why it matters here

Anoptic's GPU-driven meshlet path is this pipeline: precompute clusters, cull in a task shader, emit only surviving meshlets — the same model later standardized as VK_EXT_mesh_shader.

## Key ideas

- Task shaders amplify or cull work and can skip entire meshlets before any vertex fetch; mesh shaders then cooperatively emit vertices and primitives.
- Recommended meshlet sizes are up to 64 vertices and 126 primitives so primitive indices pack into 384-byte allocations.
- Two index buffers (unique vertices + local primitive indices) let vertex reuse be paid once at meshlet build time rather than rescanned every frame.
- Benefits vs. compute-then-indirect-draw: no preallocated output buffers, on-chip geometry, and preserved raster order.
- Exposed through GL/Vulkan extensions and later DirectX 12 Ultimate; Khronos's 2022 `VK_EXT_mesh_shader` article is the cross-vendor follow-on.
